Why Flooring Should Be Designed, Not Just Imported

There are two ways to bring a flooring brand to market in America. You can pick floors out of a factory catalog or you can design your own. Most distributors take door number one. InStride was built to take door number two. Here is why the choice quietly shapes the floor in your home and the dealer who sold it to you.

For Homeowners & Dealers

At InStride Surfaces, we do not select floors from a supplier catalog. We design each program intentionally, from substrate to color to texture, around the homes our customers are actually building today.

The resilient flooring industry has a quiet operating model. Most importers and distributors do not actually design the floors that show up under their brand names. They walk through a factory in another country, select finished products from a wall the factory has already built, attach a new label to the box, and ship the result home as their own line. It looks efficient. It is also why so many brands in this category quietly carry the same products under different stickers.

InStride was built to do something different. Our philosophy starts with intention. We engineer the substrate, curate the films, and commission the texture for every single SKU we develop. We invest the development cost up front so the floor on our partner's wall does not exist anywhere else. That decision changes everything downstream, for the homeowner who chooses the floor and for the independent dealer who recommended it.

This article is the brand-philosophy version of what we do. If you have ever wondered why some flooring brands feel different than others, this is why.

01: The Industry's Open Secret  ·  🕶️

Most Flooring Brands Do Not Actually Design Their Floors

In a typical import program, a manufacturer hands an importer a catalog. The catalog shows finished products already in production at the factory. The importer points at the planks they like, picks colors that look on-trend, and leaves with a kit. Other importers come through that same factory, point at that same wall, and leave with similar kits. By the time the floors reach the United States, the original products have been resold under multiple brand names by multiple distributors competing for the same dealer base.

What the catalog model actually delivers  📦
  • Pre-selected decorative film prints chosen by the manufacturer, not the importer
  • Standard substrate constructions inherited from a fixed factory menu
  • Generic embossing repeated across many different floor visuals
  • The same designs in circulation across multiple US flooring brands
  • Limited investment in B-films, which means more plank repeat in the finished install

None of this is illegal. None of it is even unusual. It is just what happens when speed and volume are valued more than design. The cost shows up later, in the dealer's showroom performance and in the homeowner's living room.

02: The Other Way  ·  🎨

The InStride Path: Three Stages of Design

InStride takes a different path. We do not pull floors off a wall. We coordinate substrate engineering, decorative film design, and TrueGrain EIR texture across the full production process so every product we put into market has been deliberately built, not casually selected.

I

Substrate Engineering

We begin with the structural platform underneath the floor. Construction quality, thickness, dimensional stability, and acoustic performance are all locked in before a visual is ever selected.

II

Independent Film Design

We curate every visual that ends up on a plank, sourced separately from the substrate manufacturer and built around emerging color and grain trends instead of factory inventory.

III

TrueGrain EIR Tooling

We commission custom EIR plates or wheels for every SKU, cut to align texture with the specific grain pattern of that plank's film. No reused, generic embossing.

IV

Compliance, Testing, Manufacturing

Then full certification, MSDS documentation, acoustic testing, and a multi-point manufacturer evaluation. The floor either clears the standard or it does not enter the line.

The investment is real. So is the result. Every InStride floor is built around what a great home actually wants right now, not whatever was already on the factory truck.

03: What Design Actually Costs  ·  💸

Why Design-Led Development Is Not Free

Designing your own flooring is more expensive than importing existing factory products. There is no way around it. Independent film sourcing requires its own contracts. Custom TrueGrain EIR tooling has to be paid for per SKU. The substrate audits and acoustic testing add real cost to every container. The development calendar is longer. The discipline is harder.

We make this investment intentionally and willingly. We make it because we believe the result is worth it for both the homeowner who ends up living on our floor and the independent dealer who put their brand reputation behind it. We do not pass the development cost downstream. We absorb it into the program so our partners can offer a designed-on-purpose floor at a competitive price.

The development promise

Developing unique films, dedicated B-prints, and custom TrueGrain EIR tooling is a meaningful investment by InStride Surfaces. We make this investment intentionally so our partners can lead stronger value conversations, and so our customers get a floor that actually looks designed for their home.

04: What Design Actually Returns  ·  📈

What a Designed Floor Returns to a Home and a Showroom

The return on a design-led program is real, measurable, and shows up in two places: the home of the buyer and the business of the dealer.

What designed flooring returns  ·  ✨
A floor that earns the room and supports the dealer

🏡 Authenticity at home

Color stories built around real design trends. TrueGrain EIR that aligns texture with visual. The kind of floor a homeowner is genuinely proud of for fifteen years.

🏪 Differentiation in the showroom

Floors that cannot be matched at the dealer down the street, the box store, or any competing distributor. The conversation moves from price to value.

💰 Stronger retail positioning

Unique films and custom EIR break the price-comparison loop that weakens independent dealer differentiation. The dealer can keep the conversation focused on value because the floor cannot be easily cross-shopped.

🤝 Trust on both sides

Homeowners trust the floor. Dealers trust the brand. The brand trusts the partner. The whole relationship strengthens because the product holds up.

05: For Homeowners  ·  💛

What Design-Led Flooring Actually Means in Your Home

If you are a homeowner reading this, the catalog versus designed distinction might sound like inside-baseball industry talk. It is not. It is the difference between a floor that looks beautiful in the showroom and quietly disappoints in your home, and a floor that pulls the entire space together for a decade and a half.

Designed flooring carries colors built around real design trends, the kind of warm, grounded, designer-curated palettes you have been saving in inspiration folders. It carries variation engineered into the visuals so your floor never repeats like wallpaper. It carries TrueGrain EIR texture that makes every plank read as wood under your hand and your eye. It performs the way it should because the substrate underneath is engineered, not inherited. And it costs less than you might expect because the development investment is built into the product rather than added at retail.

06: For Dealers  ·  🏪

What Design-Led Flooring Actually Means on Your Showroom Floor

If you are an independent flooring dealer reading this, the catalog versus designed distinction is the difference between fighting price wars on commodity products and standing behind a floor that does the talking for you. We built InStride to be the brand you can put on your wall and not have to defend against the box store, the dealer down the street, or the guy on the internet selling the same plank under a different sticker.

🛡️ Stronger Retail Positioning

A floor a customer cannot find anywhere else cannot be cross-shopped. The conversation in your store stays on value, not discount.

👑 Premium Positioning

The development investment is built into the product. Your team gets to sell premium without an inflated price tag.

🤝 Long-Term Partnership

We sell exclusively through independent dealers. The brand grows when our partners grow. We do not race the box store to the bottom.

07: The Standard  ·  🔥

We Do Not Import Flooring. We Design It.

Every InStride product starts with the same question. What should exist that does not exist yet? What kind of floor would a thoughtful homeowner reach for if she could custom-order one for her home? Then we go build that floor on purpose, with substrate engineering, independent decorative film design, and TrueGrain EIR tooling cut for the SKU.

That is what design-led means. It is the difference between picking a floor and creating one. And it is the reason an InStride floor reads, performs, and supports stronger retail value the way it does.

We do not begin with what is already available and ask how to sell it. We begin with what should exist, then build toward it with discipline, design, and purpose. That is the InStride difference, in one sentence.

Designed-on-purpose flooring belongs in design-aware homes and design-aware showrooms.

Whether you are a homeowner ready to find your next floor or a dealer ready to put a brand on your wall that holds the standard, the InStride team is ready to talk. Reach out, request samples, and see what design-led actually looks like.
